Some perspective

For several weeks last month I participated in a four-week leadership training course held by one of my company’s partner organizations, the Southwest Organizing Project. While I initially attended the course on the request of my supervisor, it wasn’t until my last session that I really felt like I had learned anything.

On the very last day we (re)learned the concept of a one-to-one, an opportunity to talk to someone one-to-one and really, truly get to know them. The catch: we had to do it in front of the whole group. It was awkward and hard, but definitely worth it because I gained some valuable perspective. My one-to-one partner was a girl the same age as me (24). She has a four-year old son, hasn’t gone to college and has seen one of her best friends get shot in the very community she lives in. But she was honest, so nice, works for CeaseFire and doesn’t want to abandon the neighborhood she lives in. Another classmate has two young sons and only just recently felt safe enough to walk outside her home to get the mail after seeing a young boy get shot in the head while she held her own kids. That was over a year ago.

While there are certain aspects of my own life that I wish I could change (namely I wish certain people weren’t in it), I feel truly grateful that I’ve never experienced the horrors these two girls have seen. Thank goodness for perspective.

A spoiled pooch

I’ve been taking care of Ginger for a few days now while my mom is out of town and it’s been quite the job. After just one night, she decided she wasn’t happy staying in an apartment. So on Monday morning I packed her up and headed back into suburbia so she would be more comfortable. And I’m glad I did. I don’t think the neighbors would have appreciated her incessant yapping. Plus I know she’s not happy without her routine evening walk to the park. There’s nothing worse than an unhappy pup:)

Barkin’ in the park

On Saturday I dragged Frasier along to the Anti-Cruelty Society’s annual Bark in the Park – a 3-mile walk along the lake with your pooch to help raise money for the shelter. When my dad dropped us off, it felt like every dog in Chicago was there, but we quickly found our place and Frasier was a champ. He made it through the entire walk, and only stopped a few times; he was much more interested in sniffing the behinds of those in front of him:)

Belize

Prior to working across the street from the best Belizean food in the city, I had never really even ever tasted any type of island cuisine. Fortunately, Garifuna Flava is within walking distance from us and we regularly order there for lunch or special events. Today we took several neighborhood residents there and of course, it didn’t disappoint. If Belizean food is this good, I’d love to see what the country is like. And stay at the Ka’ana Boutique Resort – it looks amazing.

Baby elephants are so cute

Every time I see an elephant (which, obviously is only at the zoo) I think of the Disney movie, Dumbo. But then I saw these photos of a baby elephant playing on the beach. This elephant is having such a ball — I wish I could teleport to this beach and join in the fun.
