Back to it

snooze

glazed

Tomorrow it’s back to the grind. While I’ve enjoyed spending my days with this face, getting coffee in the mornings and trying out new doughnuts from Glazed and Infused, I think it’s a good thing to get back to it.

America’s capital

This past weekend I headed to the nation’s capital for the first time. It was a long overdue visit to see my friend from college, Nicole. After arriving Friday evening, we set off to see the sights, try new restaurants and experience D.C. Here are a few photos from my excursions, if you’d like to see:)

Upon arriving, I headed for the Metro and made my way down the yellow line toward U street, where Nicole was staying. While many people told me their train system was awesome, I was not that impressed. D.C. doesn’t operate on a flat fee system and it was more confusing than the CTA to navigate.

On Friday evening, we headed out for dinner and then went to the top of the W Hotel to see the skyline at night.

On Saturday, after visiting the Holocaust Museum (which was amazing and heartbreaking), we toured the mall and all of the national monuments.

The World War II memorial was one of my favorites and the Rainbow Pool was refreshing and cool on such a humid day.

Abraham Lincoln memorial. Pretty classic.

The Korean War memorial was my favorite. It felt eerie and spooky, in an honorable way.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial is relatively new and I loved it. It was modern, but still touching.

Many of MLK’s famous quotes surrounded his statue. This one was my favorite.

I didn’t know D.C. had a Chinatown, and while it certainly isn’t like those of Chicago, San Francisco or New York City, it was still fun to see.

And on Sunday it was fun to meet up with friends from Madison, including Amber, who is also spending her summer in D.C.

While it was fun to visit, I was happy to come home to Chicago, and little Chick!

Warm weather + Brazil

The warm weather this week has me dreaming of tropical getaways. Like Brazil. Kind of amazing, right? Although these high temps tend to bring out the crazies around work and violence seems to be on the uptick, I just hope this warmth is a sign of a truly toasty summer.

Phoenix, part II

Besides doing some exploring and admiring the Southwestern scenery, I also managed to enjoy a thoroughly sports-filled weekend while in Phoenix. Not only did I attend two Phoenix Suns games, but I also made it to a spring training Brewers game; where I promptly snoozed in the sun and enjoyed a $6 order of nachos. But my favorite excursion: the Phoenix Zoo. Seriously the best zoo I’ve been to.

Phoenix, part I

A week ago today we were returning to Chicago from Phoenix, reminiscing about the warm weather and well, the warm weather. Traveling to Phoenix was the first time I had been to the Southwest, and hopefully not my last. The weather was ideal, the people were kind, the city was clean, the scenery was gorgeous. But I can honestly say that as nice of a place as Phoenix is, it was no Chicago. In all its glory and grit, Chicago is a real city and Phoenix just can’t compare to that.

Thank goodness its (almost) Friday

After returning from Phoenix early on Tuesday (as in 2:30am early), I’ve been struggling to catch up on sleep and get back into a normal routine. While I’m glad to be back I’m still feeling the aftereffects of post vacation blues. I’d love to share some photos of the trip next week, but in the meantime I thought I’d share these hilarious pictures. They’ve been circulating the web for quite a few days now, but I just can’t get enough. Check out more photos of Maddie on Things here.
