The country of Ukraine (along with Poland) will be hosting the European soccer championship games in June, and naturally, government officials want to make sure the public sees only the best the country has to offer. Their solution? Order a campaign to rid the streets of stray cats and dogs by killing them, usually through poison or lethal injection. So one person decided to do something about it. Christian Baur, a graduate of the Miami Ad School in Hamburg, began a new campaign. He placed a soccer ball on the street in Hamburg. As people passed by and kicked it, the ball made a howling dog noise. As people picked the ball up to see what it was all about, they were greeted with this message: “Stop killing dogs for Euro 2012. Thousands of dogs and cats get killed, burned or poisoned because of the Euro 2012. Please help us to stop this massacre.” The soccer ball also carries a phone number for monetary donations. Ukraine, you have a lot of work to do.

Missing Paige
Like I mentioned on Sunday, we unfortunately had to stop fostering Paige last Friday; it was devastating to comes to terms with, especially since we had both already become so attached to her. We were counting on adopting her, buying her a new bed with matching food and water bowls, and lots of new treats. And I was already planning summer outings with her and Frasier, hosting doggie birthday parties and including her in Christmas cards.
She is such a sweet pup that she quickly became a fixed part of Apartment 310: sounding off her alert bark in the mornings that meant it was time to wake up, nosing you in the face when you tried to hit the snooze button, waiting for you at the top of the steps on your way back in from outside, giving you real doggie hugs (seriously, her paws latched on to your waist!), snuggling next to you on the couch and watching her ears fly back as she looked so happy darting across the park. I hope you find a happy home, Paige! We miss you.

Logan Square Dog Park

For the past few weeks, every time I passed by the Near North Target on Elston, I noticed signs for a soon-to-be dog park off of Logan Blvd. and Western Ave. It was exciting to know that a dog park could be opening so near to where I live. While there’s a park right down the street from my apartment, it’s not solely for dogs and you have to be careful when there are kids around. So I did a little research and found that the Logan Square Dog Park is in the works. In fact, they’re hosting a Doggie Easter Egg Hunt this Saturday and I’m sure Frasier and Paige would love it. Find more info on the Logan Square Dog Park here.
Love is … Peanuts
A coworker recently sent me a story about the classic Peanuts books, “Love is” and “Happiness is.” These are some of my favorite books and I own almost all of them. But the best part about this story? When the author found his used copy of “Love is Walking Hand in Hand” from 1965, there was an inscription written inside from the original owner. It said:
“Love is buying someone a present with your own money.”
My Sweetheart,
Just a little ‘present’ to you, who taught me the meaning of the word this little book is about – Love. I shall always love you more than yesterday but – less than tomorrow.

Still here
Paige is still hanging around these parts, despite struggling with a bit of separation anxiety and a fear of thunderstorms. She is so sweet and pretty that she’s kind of hard to part with. So we’re doing our best to keep working with her until she gets it right. If anyone has any tips for canine anxiety I’d love to hear it.
