The Gilmore way

Ever since “Gilmore Girls” debuted just over ten years ago, I’ve been obsessed and Rory has become my idol. I used to anxiously await each week’s episode and instantly crave more once it ended; my mom and I would literally be glued to to the TV.

Last Sunday when I all I wanted to do was lay around and do nothing thanks to a brief, but blah-inducing cold, I began watching a few episodes. This past summer I re-watched the entire series and repeat episodes are regularly aired on SOAPnet and ABCFamily, so it’s not like I’ve been deprived, but once I start watching I just can’t seem to stop. This show never gets old. And so now, with an incredibly busy, stressful and potentially rejection-filled day ahead of me, all I can think about is watching right where I left off.

The weekend that wasn’t

This past weekend was supposed to be my epic weekend of giving back/volunteerism/free events. But it didn’t quite pan out that way.

The Madison Winter Festival was originally scheduled for this past weekend, but all of the events, including the Frosty 5K Dog Jog, were canceled due to the continuing protests around the Capitol Square. Well, the snowboard and ski rail jam competitions and the snow carving events weren’t canceled, but let’s be honest, all I really cared about was the dog jog.

WPS Bank/Madison Winter Festival

My dad and Frasier even came up to visit on Saturday in the hopes that we could participate in the jog, or at the very least, allow Frasier to watch from the sidelines, but it was a no-go. Even though the jog was canceled the weather was still nice and we had a good time; Frasier was dead to the world by the end of the day and slept the whole way home back to Chicago.

Saturday night Josh and I volunteered for the Dane County Humane Society by selling programs during the Wisconsin hockey game against Minnesota. We’ve sold programs for several games this season, so we’re basically old pros. Plus, going to any sporting event is an excuse to eat nachos. We caught the rest of the game after we finished selling, and it actually turned into a good game. Hockey is one sport I can actually watch without getting too bored.

By Sunday morning I had somehow convinced Josh to volunteer with me at the Madison Kid’s Expo, also in support of the DCHS, but I woke up to a sore throat and a case of the blah’s so we ended up not going.

And finally, Sunday night I had reserved a free ticket for a movie being screened as part of the 2011 Israeli & Jewish Film Festival. Unfortunately, I still wasn’t feeling up to it and the weather was just plain nasty so I ended up not attending. Fortunately there are other films being presented this week that I may try to attend; basically I’m a sucker for anything free.

Anyways, Happy Monday! Here’s a somewhat bizarre/cool story about how an Egyptian baby girl was named Facebook (literally) after the revolution.

Cheeseheads unite

The Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl last night and I’m really not all that excited about it.

After watching the Bears’ horrifying loss to the Packers two weeks ago–effectively stomping out their chances of yet another Super Bowl title–I just couldn’t get into the game. Although, the fact that I’m basically the world’s worst sports fan and could care less about professional sports, especially the NFL, might have something to do with it. Let’s celebrate, idolize and pay millions of dollars to people who have been accused of repeated sexual assault violations and dog fighting.

But, I digress. What can you do?

Fortunately, the commercials aired throughout the Super Bowl are always better than the game. Admittedly, I wasn’t even all that into them yesterday, but there were still a few I enjoyed. And for those who know me well, no, my favorites were not the Bud Light: “Dog Sitter” ad or the Doritos: “Pug Attack” ad. The NFL: “American Family” ad was by far my favorite. Any commercial with 90210, Golden Girls, Full House, How I Met Your Mother, Happy Days, Modern Family and The Sopranos in it is good by me.

Here’s a full roundup of all the commercials aired last night, courtesy of AdAge:

A delicious new book

You know that feeling you get when you start reading a new book that you just can’t put down? That feeling that everything else in your life can wait, as long as you can finish the story? Those tried and true literary feelings don’t come around nearly as often as I like. But thank the Lord above, they did today. I started reading Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer and so far so good.

As an ALA Best Book for Young Adults it’s probably a bit young for me, but seriously, the book is pretty great so far. And besides, I’m a firm believer in not putting an age level on books. Mostly because I’m a sucker for fabulous children’s books. Like this one: Please Take Me For A Walk by Susan Gal. The pooch on the cover looks just like my dog Frasier, so naturally I have to have it.

My dad–who is an eighth grade English teacher–sent Life As We Knew It to me with rave reviews (although technically he hasn’t read it yet). His school is hosting a Literary Night next month complete with quizzes and Jeopardy-esque questions, all revolving around this book. I think I may have a chance [INSERT SARCASM HERE].

On a brighter note, I saw these adorable pups at the Dane County Humane Society last night. They’re not up for adoption yet, but they should be soon. And they’re irresistible. See for yourself:
