Today Chicago saw its first significant snowfall of the season. Despite leaving work early, my evening commute still managed to take longer than I would have liked. Still, I can’t help but think the snow looks awfully pretty. From inside and behind the windows. And in these photos.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve struggled with being able to cook for myself. I lack enthusiasm and patience. I like to come home and eat right away. Then I usually end up snacking and not eating a full, balanced meal. So in an attempt to start things right and learn new recipes, cooking is slowly becoming a daily occurrence. A few samples: french toast and black bean soup with sautéed chicken.

Although Christmas has come and gone, I came across this heartwarming story several days ago about a lost dog who made it home for the holidays – eight years later! It touched my heart, and also reinforced my appreciation for microchipping. I am so glad Frasier can be scanned, just like a little bargain puppy, in case of an emergency.

Frankie Pruitt was 7 when his dad passed a sign for puppies and decided, on a whim, to take one home. He told Frankie not to tell his mom. They had plenty of room for another dog on their 100-acre alpaca and horse farm near Fredericksburg. But Kristen Pruitt said she didn’t want a pit bull in the house with her children; it seemed too dangerous.
“Then I saw her, and she was so small, and so ugly, and so cute,” she said.
And sweet: That’s why they named her Petunia.
The sandy-and-white dog slept with Frankie, wiggling up to his pillow during the night, snoring her head off. She ran free, following him around the place, an old family farm that played a role in the Civil War battle of Chancellorsville, with a pond, tall magnolias and horse fences crisscrossing the fields.
But as soon as they got back to the farm and let her out of the car, Petunia seemed to know she was home. Her tail was wagging so fast it’s invisible in the photos they took. She touched noses with Booboo, their tiny fluffy Maltese-toy poodle, then raced into the house right to the spot where her water bowl had always been.
Moral of the story: get your pet microchipped! It is so worth it, and how Petunia made it home after being picked up by a Good Samaritan.

Since moving into a new apartment, I’ve slowly begun to explore my surroundings. It isn’t easy, between working, attempting to cook dinner, exercising and still finding time to endlessly watch old episodes of Grey’s Anatomy on my Kindle. But this past Saturday we took a walk through nearby Humboldt Park and in the light of day, it looks awfully pretty. I can’t wait to see it during the summer months.

I’m generally not the type to make New Year’s resolutions. New Year’s Eve is, after all, one of my least favorite holidays. But when I came across this list of resolutions specifically for 20-somethings from Thought Catalog, I couldn’t help but be intrigued. A few that especially caught my eye:
1. Know which candidate you’re going to vote for in the upcoming presidential election, and know why.
2. Find a way to save approximately 300 dollars and spend it on a flight to see a friend or family member who lives far away.
3. Spend less than or equal to the money you earn each month.
4. Call someone on the phone at least once a week, and speak to him or her for at least ten minutes.
5. Volunteer once over the next 90 days. You’ll feel really good about it, and probably end up volunteering again over the next 275.
6. Tell someone who you love that you love them on a more regular basis. To their face, not in a text.
7. Back up your entire online life onto an external hard drive, especially your photos.
8. Crap or get off the pot. This applies to whatever thing you’re not doing that you should just sack up and do already.
