Happy Trails

This past Saturday I explored one of my favorite Chicago neighborhoods: Little Italy. Although it isn’t like it used to be (see above), this little neighborhood nestled on the Near West Side of the city, is still filled with old-school restaurants (the original Rosebud’s, Francesca’s) and picturesque tree-lined streets. And on Saturday: Frasier and Chicklet too. My dad and I took these two pups on a Happy Trails walk (courtesy of One Tail at a Time) and even though Fraiser pooped out because of the heat and Chicklet needed to be carried most of the way, it was still a fun time.

Sandwiches + States

Sandwiches are by far my most favorite food. So when I came across this design project called Stately Sandwiches, where one girl sets out to make the sandwich for each state, I was hooked. It sounds like the perfect excuse to try a new sandwich every week. The sandwich for Illinois: Italian beef. Pretty spot on. Although I’d be down to try the California too:)

Checked out the Printer’s Row Lit Fest for the first time (Chicklet was photographed by a Tribune photographer:), enjoyed some homemade carnitas and took a tour of some brand new businesses in the city. [check out H+ Records and Big Shoulders Coffee!!] Happy end of Monday!

Chicago is the city that showed the world how to work hard, build high and laugh while doing it. And you’re a part of it. Every morning you get up with a renewed determination to make your piece of our great city just a little better. Big Shoulders Coffee was created specifically for hard-working Chicagoans like you: a perfectly roasted, no-nonsense brew delivered fast and hot in our signature one-size fits all cup. No fancy lingo required. [seriously, this coffee is so good]

Cone of shame

Yesterday morning I had to drop Chicklet off at the vet’s office for cherry eye surgery. Cherry eye happens when a tear duct “pops out” from its normal position and is visible as a small red mass (you can see Chicklet’s here). Fortunately it’s a fairly common procedure and Chick was back home at the end of the day, but with a cone of shame. She hates it so much and spent the better part of the night trying to take it off and making the most pitiful yips. Fraiser has never had to wear a cone so it was hard for me to get used to as well. Poor pup!

On Friday, Frasier and Chicklet finally met one another. Chicklet had no idea where we were going while en route, but she was excited nonetheless. When we finally arrived, each pup was just happy to be in their own world. Such a letdown! I think one day they’ll be BFF:)

On Saturday my co-workers and I participated in a NeighborWorks day, spending the morning cleaning up a nearby block, weeding lawns, planting flowers and meeting new people. Manual labor is rough work and I could barely keep my eyes open later on.

Saturday evening I attended the second annual fundraiser for the Gath Foundation, which raises money for Alzheimer’s Disease. And for the second year in a row, we won zero of the raffle prizes. This was a serious bummer.

And on Sunday morning we explored the Wicker Park Farmer’s Market for the first time. While it was barely one fourth the size of the farmer’s market in Madison, it was still nice to see and peruse. Afterward we took Chicklet to the dog park for the very first time. She is definitely not a social butterfly and instead spent the majority of the time stuck to our sides. She would venture out into the open every so often, but the minute any action picked up she scurried back. It was pretty funny.
