Weekend in photos

This past Saturday was October 1, which means all things fall and all things Halloween can now ensue. Although I’m not so eager to dress up each Halloween and I can’t handle scary movies, I was somehow motivated to purchase tickets for a historic, haunted walking tour through downtown Naperville. While I didn’t have any nightmares, I was sufficiently spooked.

Yes, we all had to wear glow sticks.

My ghost meter, which reads electromagnetic field emissions around the human body. Yes. True.

The Naperville Metra station, the site of a particularly gruesome train accident decades ago, which now makes for an equally spooky story.

Orbs: according to one of the tour guides, an orb can be considered an invisible spirit or aura.

Amazing how much a difference a day (and sunlight) can make. Western suburbia is normal once again.

Well, maybe Frasier isn’t though.

A step back in time

I came across these photos several weeks ago, and was instantly charmed. I’m always drawn to black and white or old, vintage photos and this was no exception. I’ve wanted to live in Chicago for forever (hello, suburbanite), and will be the first to sing its praises (as well as faults), but there’s something about New York City that just doesn’t compare. I would give anything to go back in time.

Baseball makes me feel indifferent

In an attempt to meet fellow Badgers living in the Chicago area I recently bought two tickets to a White Sox game through the Chicago chapter of the Wisconsin Alumni Association.

The game was this past Thursday and while I always enjoy checking out a new venue (it’s been years since I’ve been to U.S. Cellular Field), eating nachos and people watching (okay fine, people judging), I’ve come to the realization that baseball games only interest me for the first hour and a half. Once the seventh inning hits, I start to fade and by the time the top of the ninth rolls around, I am so ready to leave.

Although I didn’t walk away with any new friends and was slightly annoyed by the people sitting around me, I think it’s safe to say another White Sox game could be in my future. And side note: the staff at U.S. Cellular are far superior to those at Wrigley Field. Just saying.

Tooth fairy not welcome

Yesterday morning I was forced to go where no one ever wants to go: the dentist. To have three cavities filled, no less. Not only do I despise going to the dentist (thanks to the very first dentist I ever had who was as rude and obnoxious as they come), but I am severely proud of the fact that I have managed to avoid all said cavities for the last 10 to 12 years.

Until approximately three weeks ago. I blame the Twizzlers and Hot Tamales I’ve come to love so much.

In addition to having the three cavities filled, I also had to have an old filling replaced with whatever new-fangled “dental restorative material” they use now.

While I have nothing but good things to say about my now dentist–who I only just started going to last month–he fell prey to one of the most annoying habits a dentist can possess: talking to you when your entire jaw is numb, you can’t feel your tongue and your mouth is filled with cotton swabs and bizarre contraptions used to make sure your mouth is held open at just the right angle. No, I can’t respond to your inane questions, I can barely swallow.

All irritability aside, I am now cavity free and don’t have to see the dentist again until 2012. I’ve also learned to never underestimate a dentist you truly like. You only have one smile, people.
