On my mind…

Hour and 15 minutes from Chicago Lawn to Ravenswood. Whaaat.
That’s okay, yummy pizza, tiramisu I actually like + great people made it completely worth it.
Discovered a posh new hangout for city pups, Urban Pooch.
Undecided on whether I like the South side or the North side better. Thoughts?
Frasier is an annoying pooch when he only gets one walk a day.
The weather needs to consistently stay warm so two walks are not out of the equation.
Promptly falling asleep from 9pm to 1030pm after returning home? Hmm.
Seriously lame?
Or seriously cool?
Apparently your idea of cleaning is spraying a little Lysol around?
I see that you missed that huge pile of litter that needs to be swept.
Gag me.
Busy weekend ahead.
Eeep.

Sweet and simple

With yesterday being Mother’s Day, my mom and I decided to take my grandma out to lunch. Since she lives in a nursing home and doesn’t get out all that often, she was thrilled at the prospect of heading out for the day. The nice weather that FINALLY decided to grace the Chicagoland area was near perfect and it made for a lovely day.

While our outing was originally supposed to be a “just girls” event, my grandpa decided to join us last minute (aka, we forgot he always visits on Sundays … woops). Either way, while my mom drove and I pointed out where we were, my grandparents sat sweetly in the backseat, holding hands. Since my mom and I basically celebrated Mother’s Day for just the two of us on Saturday (manicures/pedicures/shopping/gift-giving/Grey’s Anatomy=bliss), this day was all about my gram.

Gift to Mom.

And she ate it up. Literally. After gifts and flowers, we headed out for Mexican, where she promptly became a member of the CPC — Clean Plate Club — as she wolfed down her tacos, rice and beans. The only downside to the meal: listening to my grandpa show off to the waitress by speaking only in Spanish (thus making me remember, why for the love of all that is good, did he and my grandma decide to NOT teach the rest of this powerful language?) and his incessant persistence that eating cow tongue and brain tacos is actually good.

They're actually smiling.

Once back at the nursing home, the three of us left my gram in a decidedly content state, which is always a good thing. Thank goodness for moms.

Blast from the past.

On my mind…

Drinking orange juice straight out of the carton.
My mom would not approve.
So tired I can barely keep my eyes open.
But I must wait for my grandma’s clothes to finish drying.
Thank goodness tomorrow is Friday.
Weekends mean everything when you get up at 6am M-F.
Craving White Castle, a milkshake and a view of Midway Airport.
Wishing Frasier AND Ginger could sleep by my side.
Shoot.
I hate it when you think you’re done for the night and can start getting ready for bed…
…but then you remember you have to scan that really important document.
Random. But.
Will it ever feel like spring here?
HGTV you are the best.
Million Dollar Rooms, you are not.
What makes a yawn happen anyways?
Happy Cinco de mayo!
I should have celebrated with a taco.
Mmmm. A taco sounds delish right now.
Vegetable/cheese/noodle mixture, you were good, but not good taco good.
Plain orange juice or orange pineapple?
Orange pineapple. Every time.
Ding.
The laundry is doneee.
Finally.
This, however, means I need to go to the scary downstairs.
Shoot.
Saturday, are you here yet?

Patience, what’s that?

They say patience is a virtue, but it is most definitely not something that comes easily for me.

This was evident this evening when I visited my grandma at her nursing home. Since she suffers from dementia, she’s not always “all there in the head”, to put it mildly. Sometimes it can be hard to keep your patience with her when she’s not making any sense or when she snottily demands the food you brought her, or when she accuses you of not visiting in weeks.

However, I’ve watched others suffer from Alzheimer’s and I know first-hand how unpleasant and merciless this disease can be. I also know that it is not anyone’s fault. And I definitely know that I love my gram to pieces and she deserves the best from me. So you just have to grin and bear it.

If you’re interested in donating to a great cause to benefit Alzheimer’s disease, consider making a donation to the Ann and Raymond Gath Memorial Foundation. All donations or inquiries may be directed to annandraygathfoundation@gmail.com.

An unexpected rush

Every morning on the way to work I pass by Midway Airport, and despite the traffic I sometimes run into because of it, traveling past this busy transit center definitely has its perks.

I’ll be sitting at the light, usually listening to my latest audio book, eating my bagel when all of a sudden I hear a loud rumbling noise. Before I can even crane my neck to look out the window, a plane appears so close that it looks as if I could stick my hand out the window and touch it. And then all too soon, the moment is over and the plane has landed.

The news heard round the world: to all the families who lost loved ones on that awful day...

One of my coworkers told me the other day that when she and her husband were first dating, they would sit in the parking lot at one of the nearby restaurants, munching on french fries and waiting for the planes to pass by overhead. A charming idea that perfectly suits the Midway neighborhood; I love it.
