Late night craving

It’s almost 11pm on a week night so I should be preparing for bed; those 6am wake up calls do not come easy, especially when you have a whining/barking dog who starts begging to go for a walk as soon as the alarm goes off.

*Love you anyways pooch*

However, this evening while I feel myself getting more and more tired every passing second, I’ve got the biggest craving for a late night snack. I guess that’s what happens when you eat dinner at 5pm. The problem is that the craving I’m dying to satisfy is for a sub sandwich from the best sandwich shop ever. And that shop is now closed.

Yellow Submarine has been closed for several years now, but anytime I’m anywhere remotely near the old location on Archer Avenue, I can’t help but wish it was still in business. My cousin and I used to be obsessed with this place and even though it was a tiny hole in the wall the service was outstanding and the food even better.

I guess Subway and Jimmy John’s will have to do for now. Do you have any favorite restaurants that are now closed?

A standing tradition

For the past few years every time I came home from school (well not every time, but often enough), my friends and I would come together on a Saturday morning for brunch. Even though getting up early on the weekends is often something I’m sure we all avoid, there’s something about a yummy breakfast and old high school gossip that is so appealing.

This past Saturday we went to Egg Harbor Cafe at Yorktown Mall. Despite our waitress who rushed us through our meal, the gossip (and the french toast) was delish.

What are some of your favorite traditions?

Homemade vs. store-bought

I’m sure most people would say homemade is better than store-bought when it comes to just about anything, and for the most part I wholeheartedly agree.

Case in point: this past weekend I picked up some refrigerated cookie dough to make my own Easter treats. I settled on Pillsbury peanut butter cookies and some Nestle Toll House mini brownie bites. While they definitely tasted good and satisfied my desire to bake a little something sweet, I was much more satisfied with the homemade banana cream pie/pudding treat my mom made.

Minus the cool whip on top.

Besides homemade food, I also came across a few homemade items from my childhood, all made by my grandma. She was insanely good at sewing, and in addition to clothes and little children’s books she sewed together out of cloth, she also made me dolls. As a devoted and adoring fan of all things American Girl, these two little dolls just tug at my heart. Homemade wins every time.

To Milwaukee and back

I spent my day in Milwaukee, and despite the abysmal weather, I enjoyed traveling back to the Land of Cheeseheads. I took the Amtrak from Union Station in Chicago and just 90 minutes later I was in Milwaukee. This was my first time on an Amtrak train and I was pleasantly surprised by how nice the experience was. The roundtrip ticket was cheaper than a tank of gas, the seats were comfy enough with plenty of leg room and I didn’t have to worry about traffic or parking. #winning.

Amazingly, the seats really were almost this nice.

Once I arrived, Josh and I checked out a new restaurant (new for us)–AJ Bombers–which unfortunately I wasn’t too impressed with. Going to a place known for its burgers on Good Friday, however, may have had something to do with it. Still, Josh did order a burger and rated it only “decent.” My grilled cheese fared about the same. Better luck next time.

From lunch we headed out to the Mayfair Mall to catch an afternoon showing of Water for Elephants. I had been looking forward to seeing this movie and while I have plenty of praise for Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson (!!), there was just too much circus-themed animal cruelty for me to give this film a raving review. Fortunately, I was able to use my AMC free movie passes so we didn’t waste any money. Plus, the gigantic Cinnabon we shared afterward more than made up for our iffy take on the movie.

Why must you be so unhealthy?

And just like that, an hour and a half later I was back in IL. ‘Til Monday.

On my mind…

If you own a cat, you must learn to pick up the litter. Pretty basic.
When will the weather be warm enough to take late night walks with Frasier? This whole 40 degree thing has got to go.
I hate it when your hands feel so sticky even though you just washed them.
Sometimes I feel very OCD when it comes to cleaning. I just vacuumed and mopped, but I feel like I need to do MORE.
How many carbs in one day is too much?
Two bagels, one peanut butter sandwich and a few bites of pound cake … too much?
So bummed when you think you found a great deal, but then discover that $22 is one way, not round trip.
$44 is not a lot, but still.
If gas weren’t so expensive, this would not be an issue.
$4.19? Seriously? Seriously? Insane.
You know you’re annoying when Frasier avoids you like the plague. TAKE.A.HINT.
Craving an Easter Reese’s egg. SO.GOOD.
Stop coddling the cats. They don’t like it.
Wishing this book was as good as The Help. It’s just weird.
Looking forward to a day off and catching up on some reading, maybe seeing Water for Elephants.
Saying a prayer for those who are still out of work and/or laid off. WE.NEED.JOBS.
Wishing good luck to this girl. HELP.DONATE.
